My father was born May 17, 1882 in (probably) Latvia. He taught at a religious girl's school as pictured in the photo. Pa was involved in the 1905 revolution and was to be taken into custody at this school but because he was fluent in German, he and others, were able to convince the soldiers that he was the fireman and not the teacher. That was his last day as teacher. He hid in the forests until 2008 when he was able to get to England. Records at Ellis Island show that he arrived in the US on March 25th 1911 using the name Jacob Kalnin age 25 which meant that he would have been born in 1886. Pa was detained at Ellis Island for a short period of time possibly because he did not have proper papers. He went to the Boston area where he had friends and then married my mother Marta Dansit on 3/8/1913. They settled in the small town of Sharon, MA just before I was born. (1933) Over the years my mother received many letters from Latvia and other countries but my father received very few from Europe. Only one letter which was mailed from Stockholm was saved. The letter from Alex Anisimovs lead my wife and I to Stockholm thinking that this one person, who knew where my father lived, could have been a relative. We could not find Alex or his family. We reached a dead end in Sweden. Father told me he had Swedish roots. While reading my mother's mail we found a letter from an Edvin Lazdins in Riga who we decided could be a close relative. After a couple of years of writing letters we accepted mother's first cousin's (Edvin Lazdin) invitation to visit. We arrived in Riga in June of 1990 in time for one heck of a John's nite party in some small town in the forest of Latvia. During the two day stay at the farm we met about 30 cousins/relatives from all over the old Soviet Union. One cousin came in from the Urals to meet us, even one active Russian army captain joined us, probably at great risk. After the festivities we traveled with Ed to meet other relatives in Vilnius, Talnin, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Minsk and other towns whose names I cannot remember. Not one relative knew anything about my father or could identify the school in the photo. But then again, I thought my father's birth name was Jacob Kalnin. Back in September (this Year) I sent out an appeal to all my relatives/family who were born in the US if they had any information or story they could relate to me. A niece living in Ireland discovered in her father's papers a letter addressed Viktor Mangulis in Sharon, MA in 1937. The letter contained probate documents which pa returned to the Latvian District Court having signed them as Viktor Mangulis. He was in Indrikis Mangulis will who I now firmly believe was my grandfather. After decades of searching for Jacob Kalnin, who did not really exist, I now would like to find pa's roots, his kin folk, just as I found dozens of relatives on my mother side of the family. I certainly appreciate your offer of help and if I do find my roots it will mean a trip back to Latvia (or wherever) at which time I would like to take you out for dinner. Thanks so much for your help.
