| Hello everyone,
I am an American of Russian ancestry. I know my family tree going back several centuries. My ancestors were landowners and Russian army officers. I have the name, rank, and biographical information (regiments, battles, dates of service, rank, etc) of 15 or so male ancestors. This month, I am living in Moscow. I want to research the catalogue at Russian State Military Historical Archive, but I don't know the protocol for entering this building. When I went there last summer, I was stopped by a security at the front desk, and she didn't speak English.
Can someone explain to me, how to I access Russian State Military Historical Archive? Do I have to call them first, or anyone enter the premises themselves? I can read basic Russian, but can't speak the language.

I can read Cyrillic, I can read names, dates, names of regiments, and battles.My Russian vocabulary is about 800 words, and I know simple tenses. I can translate Russian using dictionaries. I've already seen RGVIA biographies of some ancestors.I can write in simple Russian (present tense). Be aware that I know the full names birth dates, and death dates of all my military ancestors. I know their military ranks too. No problem there. What I need is for someone here to tell me the protocol for a foreign to enter RGVIA. Do I have to arrange a registration with them? Does RGVIA need to give me special permission? Who do I call? Also, I am told that RGVIA has a large library card catalogue in which visitors can look up family names. Is this true?
