Не берусь судить, но фраза "состоящий в 8-м классе" как бы указывает на классный чин по Табели.
Сомневаюсь, что в метрике было бы указано, в каком классе гимназии он преподавал.

По уставу 1871 года, хоть и обучение длилось уже не 7, а 8 лет, но считалось семиклассным.

Если верить следующей информации, учителя гимназий начинали с титулярного советника, а это 9-й чин.
Так, что вполне мог быть и коллежским асессором.

In my opinion, there's no particular evidence on what grade he taught. I wrote above that it refered to class system of the Table of ranks.
And posted similar examples from yandex archives metrical books.
In my opinion also it was very unlikely that they even mentioned such details as what grade a teacher did in church records.
It was completely irrelevant for such documents, unlike the ranks and offices which they usually mentioned.

As for what grade he had and what subjects he taught, it can be found only in his service list (формулярный список)/

The memorial book (памятная книжка) or address calendar (directory) (адрес-календарь) of Kovno governorate for the 1880s can help with where he worked in general.
