this is about Archbishop Fialkowski in 1872

Fialkowski, Arcivescovo di Mohilew. La solenne funzione ebbe luogo nella Chiesa cattolica romana maltese di S. Correct, he was a Cathedral Canon, Prelate and possibly more since the color of his Soutane (in the oldest picture from 1902) is other than black!

In this case, you are probably right: it really can be the order of a Maltese cross. But he hardly Russian origin. Awarding the Order of St. John of Jerusalem were discontinued in 1810, and after 1817 the heirs of deceased knights were forbidden to wear their crosses.
Perhaps this is "The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem" - a similar award of British monarchs.

As for the arms, I only have their descriptions of the "Collection of Highly approved diploma arms" in Russian. I think tomorrow I'll be able to provide you with my images of those coats of arms.

Always glad to help!

I had considered England as well,
....
until we received the information from the Corps des Pages,
that:

"""All hand written (catholic) documents (from this church)
were taken by a
"french" Priest, during a nightly action to France,
somewhere around late 1920's - to early 1930's! """

Would love to know where they are now!

Thank you,
they are very very interesting,
both of them look like subversions of Baltic-??? Swedish Arms,
especially the first looks similar to the Maerten-Märten Arms,
which goes back to a
Johann Märten 1713!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I know there is also a similar one to the second one,
also belonging to a Maerten, Merten, Martini Family......just can't find it again!

I believe that they are both "Canting Arms"!

Thank you, ......very interesting!!!!!!!!

I would not argue that these arms are similar to the Swedish or the Baltic. They are consistent with the traditions of "chancellery's" (канцелярской) heraldry of the Russian Empire of the 19th century.
The first CoA is really kind of similar to the arms of Märten (is it possible that Martynovs and Märtens - relatives ???), but neither this nor the other is "canting".

If you know his genealogy, and he came from a noble family, the possibility exists to find his arms. Where does his family? From what area?

His family (my family a_003.gif ) is from Riga,
I am stuck in the year around 1705 dntknw.gif !

Canting arms are heraldic bearings that represent the bearer's name in a visual pun or rebus.

In many Martin, Marten, Martini, Maertens Arms you find a white goose, bird, swan, Pelikan etc. all hinting to St. Martin, also known as Martin of Tours!

But the etymology (origin) of surnames obviously Russian. Or surname was russificated (converted into Russian)?
Were your ancestors recorded in Noble Genealogical Books (Дворянские Родословные книги) of Baltic provinces or other provinces?

Many experts believe that "canting" can be called only one CoA, figures of which clearly indicate the surname. For example, a lion in the arms of Lvov or eagle in the arms of Orlov etc. 101.gif
