Yes, vovchik1, they were Jewish (I meant to say!)
Thank you VERY MUCH for this information! I had no idea this source existed. I actually have a friend who works at the local Family History Center regularly, she will be able to help me get started there.

I wonder if there might be a way to find out about a "choir" that travelled to England to give concerts? Perhaps there are records somewhere.

Also, I'm wondering what path people followed to get from Russia (Ukraine) to England around 1900? I can't find any record of their arrival in England, so far.

ÌàðòàÔ, no clue about the choir, sorry... could be anything from a local theater to synagogue choir (not sure if women are allowed to sing in sinagogues though) . As for the travel - they'd most likely take a train to France (probably) and then a boat across the Channel... If they did not announced themselves as immigrants right away there may be no records of their arrival to England. Nobody cared. There were NO VISAS needed before the Great War.
Just think about this - that was the true freedom of movement! unlike nowdays... to_keep_order.gif

Good point about the choir - I'll have to ask family sources on that.

I've just copied out ALL the stuff in those two search-result pages you sent me - what a LOT of stuff! But then I tried to find similar material for Gomel, and found very little, to my surprise. Well, this will keep me busy for awhile, and maybe....I will FIND something!

Good luck! Unfortunately, the mormone church did not microfilm all the archives. They probably just didn't get to the Gomel Regional Archive
http://archives.gov.by/index.php?id=294348

The records still may exist though. You should try sending a request to the archive directly.
