You misunderstood me. Metric books have nothing to do with it.
According to the documents on the naturalization of Maria Tolstoy, Grigory Nechaev was born in 1853. But in 1853 he had already fought in the Crimean War. The age difference is at least 20 years

Maybe there's a possibility to appeal to the RGVIA (Russian State Archive of Military History), since they can have files and other documents on officers, especially if you know where they served and the period.
Officers had to fill out special forms called 'formilarnye spiski', a kind of record of their service, which included info about their background, at least, it theiretically should contain the social estate they belogned to before the service.
