I am looking for information about my grandfather.
My Greek grandfather, Vasilios Vasile Tzouris (also spelled Giuris), was born in Vasiliko, Bulgaria (present day Tsarevo, Bulgaria) on January 1, 1880. In the early 1900s he moved to Odessa where he worked as a Baker. I believe he made and sold Baklava. During the time he lived in Odessa, he served in the White Army of Tzar Nicholas II. I believe he was a Cossack and I would like to find records of his service if they exist. Are there existing military records for the soldiers that served in the White Army?
I have attached a photo of my grandfather that was taken in Odessa on January 1, 1919. This would have been my grandfathers birth day and name day. He is standing in the middle of 2 people sitting on each side of him that are wearing military uniforms. I would like to know if anyone can give me information about the uniforms that these soldiers are wearing (military units, departments, and rank etc).[/q]
As my colleagues already mentioned there is no insignia on this photo. The person who stands behind is wearing a civilian coat. Two others are wearing so called French jackets that became very popular in Russia at the end of WW1. These jackets resembled British style military uniform and sometimes were worn as such. But to be called uniform it requires some form of insignia to indicate what side the person belongs to and the rank. During the Russian Civil war it was also common for all sides to wear random regular civilian cloth without any distinguishing signs. In such cases its impossible to figure out who are on the photo. | | |
