The cultural heritage of Jews in Northern Lithuania
Till the World War II the Jews were the biggest national minority in Lithuania. In many towns of Northern Lithuania they settled in the 18th century when Šiauliai and Joniškis received the privilege.
In the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century the sacral buildings of Jewish communities stood in approximately 32 towns and small towns of Northern Lithuania.
Now the remnants of old Jewish cemeteries can be found in 27 small towns of Lithuania and only some of former synagogues are left in Pakruojis and Rozalimas (wooden), Pušalotas, Linkuva, Joniškis, Lygumai, Žagarė, Vabalninkas (brick). In other places - Pasvalys, Joniškėlis and Biržai - they are changed very much.
The architecture of the monuments of Jewish culture (with the exception of synagogues) did not differ from other buildings of social purpose. The Oriental nature and purpose of synagogues show the composition of the facades and symbols of Judaism used in exterior - the hexagonal Star of David and the tables of Decalogue.
