To the left is Ivan Slovasevitch(he changed his name many times) he lists his birth Sliva, Russia in Sept. 14,1885. We were told that he was with the Imperial Russian Army. This photo is dated 1909, two years after he immigrated to the US, via Galveston, Texas. Can anyone identify in specific, his uniform ? Thank you !
[/q]

Junior under-officer (on the left) and a soldier (on the right) of the Imperial Russian Army in dark green (practically black) uniform that was initially introduced in 1907 and issued to troops starting in 1909. This pattern was officially replaced by khaki field uniform in 1913 but brought back in 1914 when the WW1 started. Because of the uniform shortage during the war it was issued to various support and reserve units that were not in direct combat with the enemy. The light blue belt (a sash) is non-regulation detail that under-officers were not supposed to wear but its a common feature on many photographs from that time period.

The rank of the under-officer (sergeant) is indicated by 2 stripes on shoulder boards and gold lace on the coats collar and cuffs. Dark (red) shoulder boards and light (blue) collars and bands on peaked caps are colors of a second regiment of each infantry division. A particular regiment can be identified by either a number or a royal monogram on the shoulder boards. Unfortunately in this case the image resolution is too low to see anything. Theoretically it possible to try to guess the unit based on the city or town where the photo was taken.

In the Russian Empire the draft age was 21. DOB of September 1885 means that he was probably drafted in 1906. At that time the active service in the infantry lasted for 3 years
