Hey Carolyn, welcome to the forum. How do you know his DOB? Do you have any relevant documents from Russia from that time period? Any document you might have will help in further search.

Also just FYI, Almaty was called "Верный" in 19th century. If was founded only in 1854 as a military fort. So either John was born after 1854, or he was born elsewhere. What makes you think he was born in Almaty?

By the way, if one assumes that John's father was of French origin and was in Верный in 1850's, then he most likely be a high-ranking military officer. However I find it a very unlikely scenario, as the troops who settled the area were mostly Cossacks.

For various reasons, it is very unlikely that a 14 year old boy traveled by himself. Perhaps, his entire family relocated to Odessa. So I think it makes sense to also search for Серант's in Odessa.

You have several reliable dates of John Ambrose Searant's life: the year of death is 1934, the date of the wedding is 1883. Obviously, you calculated the date of birth from these data (since the obituary published in The Newcastle Herald newspaper indicated the age: 80 years >>> 1934 - 80 = 1854 year of birth). You also have a family legend that John Ambrose Searant was born in the city of Verniy (the former name of the city of Alma-Ata. In Russian, Verny (RU: Верный) literally means "faithful").
This needs to be verified, since the city of Verniy was founded in 1854 as a military fortification. The first residents were kozak's, at first they lived in barracks. And the first residential houses (and families) in Verny appeared only in 1857. I will quote: <<The Russian scientist and traveler Pyotr Petrovich Semenov (he will become Semenov-Tyan-Shansky only in May, 1906) first visited the Verny fortification in September 1856. At that time, according to his description, there were no houses in the fortification, except for the hastily built house of the bailiff of the Great Horde. Документов того времени у нас нет - много-много лет пытались найти какие-то из них, но безрезультатно.

Он рассказал своим детям несколько историй из своей жизни до приезда в Австралию и рассказал им, что родился в Алматы и отправился в Одессу, чтобы присоединиться к кораблю - он убегал и не хотел, чтобы его нашли. Мы также задавались вопросом о возможности того, что его отец служил в армии.

His date of birth was listed in the family bible that he and his wife started and on his death certificate. We have no documents from this time - have been trying for many, many years to find some of these but to no avail.

He told his children some stories of his life before coming to Australia and he told them he was born in Almaty and travelled to Odessa to join a ship - he was running away and did not want to be found. We have also wondered about the possibility of his father being in the military.
