Hello, I am working on a family tree and am having trouble with the section concerning my Russian family. They initially came from Germany in 1760's, part of the Volga German settlers. The last known relatives born in Russia before coming to North America were:

Johannes Benner
born 26 October 1869 - Yagodnaya Polyana
died 4 Feb 1933 - Alberta, Canada

Maria Katherina Benner
born 25 December 1871 - Yagodnaya Polyana
died 10 February 1951 - Alberta, Canada

they had approx. 7 children

I only have Canadian & US documents and sources for them and cannot find anything for them from Russia.
I would like to find out their parents and if there are/were any that stayed in Russia and what their fate was.

Through THIS thread I was able to see what happened to a Benner during WW2 but not which region he was from.

Hello,

following some quick ideas for your questions, there might be more:

1. Ammburger Database: a German database on mostly Germans living in pre-revolution Russia:
https://www.amburger.ios-regensburg.de/

Enter the last name Benner and you will find two entries long before the time you mentioned. The first one is for somebody coming to Russia from Mülhausen.

2. Look for the place name on yandex.ru (Russian search engine).
You will find a map of Yagodnaja Poljana:
http://i070.radikal.ru/0909/02/5cd3d32e4a8c.jpg

In this map you will find the names of the house owners around 1900.
There is a Adam Benner listed for two buildings.

3. Trace the name of Johannes Benner on Myheritage.

You will find a Johannes Benner.
Born 1869, immigrated 1902 to Canada, died 1933 in Canada

His parents are stated in this tree as:
Heinrich Benner, Born approx. 1849
and
Anna Elisabeth Benner born Befus in 1825.
All are born at the same place Yagodnaja Poljana.
The tree shows more data on the Benner family, this is only an extract.

If you are not a paying member of myheritage you should find the same tree on familiysearch which is free.

If you need any further help feel free to ask.

Best regards
Alex

Thank you for the suggestions. I have most of this info already, the problem is no russian sources. The parents of Johannes for example are put with speculation, no proof. I have familysearch and have been doing all i can to find

Just a short one on Russian sources:

https://base.memo.ru/person/li...AAAA%2C%2C

If you enter Benner= Áåííåð in the last name box you will receive 191 hits.

Listed here are people suffering from political terror in the USSR. One a few you will find additional information or hints where they have been found.

I will come back later with some more ideas.

Good morning,

here’s a second Russian source:

https://gwar.mil.ru/heroes/?la...amp;page=1

This is a database of soldiers serving in WW1, mostly wounded, dead, or POW.
There are also some Benners …..
Now you have to puzzle a little bit.

Some more links for today:

https://www.worldcat.org/title.../226235835

That’s a published book with the data from the Russian Census of Yagodnaja Poljana 1834 from the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
This is not a direct link but you have to contact them via the homepage in order to buy a copy. As far as I have seen there are also additional books for other census dates.
https://www.ahsgr.org/

On there page is also a hint for family charts.
There is one for Benner:

https://www.ahsgr.org/page/SurnameAG

Last one is a large collection of genealogical data and information about people of Yagodnaja Poljana. There are many references to Benner family members:

https://rdscheuerman.files.wor...-i-iii.pdf

I think you should have a look on the census data first in order to make sure data for people you know…..

Hope that will help a bit.

Regards
Alex
