Thank you so much for your reply. I was doubting myself but then the facial features are so siimilar and unusual. It was the unusal aspect that made me think.
I will possibly be able to track him down now. I have a feeling he could be an interesting person incuding his time in Harbin.
Do you have the name of the school? It would help me with reserach.

Hi, I am being ridiculously overly wishful again, He reminds me of a gentleman in another photograph which would have been taken perhaps ten years or even more in Russia, before this class photograph in Harbin was taken.
Clutching at straws I thought I'd ask if anyone knew the gentleman’s name rather than put out a comment where the answer would very unlikely be affirmed. I am always seeing similarities in people and then make stupid assumptions, Nevertheless I'll post the photograph. Taken from the very first page in Nina Schudnat’s photo album.

Greetings to all.
I decided to write a short comment regarding a gentleman named Mr. Orchard. This was a man who worked tirelessly corresponding with Australian Government officials including the then minister of immigration Harold Holt who was shortly to become the Prime Minister of Australia. Minister Holt had the decency to write back in person to several of Mr. Orchards letters where the latter pleading for assistance. This was during the threat and occupation in Harbin Manchuria by the Japanese.
Writing regularly in the hope of having White Russians be granted permission to enter Australia as living residents. I know only of Mr., Orchard from looking through over three hundred pages attached to the immigration records of just one sole individual. I am certain documents written by him to numerous authorities would exist under many other hopeful immigrant files, but he will never be known or remembered for his efforts. Hence this is my small tribute to him. Additionally, there are several surnames included in listen that many subscribers will be familiar with and some information on their occupations inn Harbin and so forth. I wish everyone a peaceful and serene Easter.

Это был человек, который неустанно работал, переписываясь с австралийскими правительственными чиновниками, включая тогдашнего министра иммиграции Гарольда Холта, который вскоре стал премьер-министром Австралии. Поэтому это моя небольшая дань уважения ему. Кроме того, в прослушивание включено несколько фамилий, с которыми многие подписчики знакомы, и некоторая информация об их занятиях в Харбине и так далее. Hope you like the photograph of a young Nina Panchenko in that very intriguing Christmas troupe photograpgh. I do not know why but Nina Shudnat had dozens of photos of Panchenko in her collection. I discovered the latter daughter years ago but she choose not to correspond. I think my over enthusiasm was accidentally misread which I can understand.,

I noticed the lovely Christmas photograph on this page above so in keeping with that theme here is a lovely photograph of a very young Nina Panchenko surrounded by dozens of people and one very impressive Christmas tree. This could well be the first time someone has seen this image in decades - it's possible anyway. Sorry the file is too small - I will find the original and replace it very very soon.

Djaha I am indebt to you. That was very kind of you indeed. I hadn't a chance yet to go through the links due to teaching. The difficulty for many is that posts of certain people etc. may have been already recorded on a forum but when you are as successful as to have over 700 pages no-one has the time to look through such a huge amount.
I think I have other photographs with him in them. Considering what an important role in played in musical theartre, band performances and more it is not surprising. I have a day off work tomorrow so I'll really dig in and enjoy your posts/links.
People would ask me why I wanted to know so much about Nina Shudnat and I think the reason changed over years. It is because when the study of a person's lifetime opens up entire chapters of importance such as the White Russian arts in Shanghai, famous poets, dancers and artists it is this bigger picture that I think thousands would be interested in if only they were to have had the time and luck and help I have received. This site is exceptional. Thank you once more.

Not long ago the moderator posted a lovely couple of photographs of Ekaterina Orlovskaya singing, entertaining diners including Larisa Andersen. There were two maybe three fellows sitting at the table with her. One is very familiar to me but I could not remember the name nor association but now I have seen the man in another photograph. Gulnara and many forum subscribers will instantly recognize and recall the gentleman and the photo may be of interest. He is second from the right hand side of the photograph.
If it is okay with the moderator I will simply write in English from now on. I noted that Google Translate did in fact change meaning of some sentences I wrote in prior topics. Hope that is acceptable to all.
The photograph is of The Private Russian Opera Company. In the center are Feodor Chaliapin and Bronislava Niinska. On the floor in the center is Irina Grzhebina. 1930s. This is from the Archive of M.Yu.Doriomedova (Naples). Two questions arise for me. 1. Maybe Nijinska.is the beautiful lady in a photograph I put on the forum earlier and will do once more? 2. The and role of the gentleman in question?

это оригинальный шестиугольный павильон, названный «Павильон Цзянцзюнь»? Если так, то внешний вид этого павильона сегодня сильно отличается от того, каким он был. На этих фотографиях Генеральный павильон в то время был павильоном в китайском стиле с двойными карнизами и четырьмя углами, построенным из белых березовых бревен и наполненным примитивной атмосферой. Я делаю образованное предположение. Пожалуйста, сообщите мне и читателям, если я ошибаюсь. Я знаю, что там был Детский железнодорожный парк, но я сомневаюсь, что это он. Павильон Цзянцзюнь и весь парк — это яркие огни и техно-три дня. Я предпочитаю простоту и красоту того, что было раньше. Ксении он определенно нравился тогда.

Is this the original hexagonal pavilion, named "Jiangjun Pavilion"? If so the appearance of this pavilion is today very different from what it was. In these photographs the General Pavilion at that time was a Chinese-style pavilion with double eaves and four corners, built with white birch logs and was full of primitive atmosphere. I am taking an educated guess. Please inform me and readers if I have it wrong. I know there was a Children Railway Park, but I doubt that is it. The Jiangiun Pavillion and entire park is all bright lights and techno these days. I prefer the simplicity and beauty of what is was before. Xenia certainly liked it back then.
Sorry the images are from original photograph slides only about 2 by 1.5 cm.
Xenia Vladimirovna is in the last image. I believe it features in the book we were discussing earlier so to have an original copy makes me feel blessed. The system here was not working for days hence the delay. All seems great now.

Sincere thank you and appreciation for noting and correcting errors from that webpage link I provided. It is near impossible for me to know the facts from fiction on other sites unless courteous and studious people like yourself idenitfy errors and misinformation. My only suspicion of error was where the author wrote. ' Ksenia Vladimirovna's father allegedly served in the Russian navy...' that seemed very weird logistically and in so many other ways but I couldn't know for sure. So I have much gratitude for your efforts and also indepth knowledge. Experts like yourself are vitally important on furms like this.

Чужие города Strange Cities: A Russian bandleader in Shanghai – Sergei Ermolaeff (Serge Ermoll). What drew this to my attention is that the photograph of Xenia was also in my collection. She features in other photographs in my possession as well. This includes alongside ballerina Nina Panchenko and others at what seems a modest yet popular outdoor social hut. The connections bewteen all these talentes be they poets, dancers, painters shine through with pictorial evidence.
My grandmother Xenia Vladimirovna was born in Russia 1908. Her father was in the Tsarist Russian navy. After the Bolshevik revolution 1917 he did not return from sea. After a brief marriage to a widowed vet surgeon with five sons, Xenia told me, her mother Eugenia and three sisters Helena, Galya, and Marya made the journey by Trans-Siberian railway to Harbin, Manchuria in 1923 to find husbands in China. As a singer and dancer at the Modern Hotel, Harbin across the ballroom she met my grandfather Serge Ermolaeff (Serge Ermoll and His Music Masters). “I didn’t think Serge would notice but he did, we Russian girls wore beautiful gowns because at least we got paid, not like my Chinese friend Rose, who had to make money in other ways….” she told me half her life lease later in Sydney. Later in Shanghai she married Serge 1933 where they re-met at the majestic Hotel. My father Serge Jr was born 1943 in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation in China. After a successful career as a jazz orchestra leader in the big clubs and hotels of Shanghai: Paramount, Cathay Hotel, Ladlow’s Cassinova, the French Club, Wagon Lits my grandfather Sergei accepted passage on the Chan Cha ship to Hong Kong and then Sydney Australia 1951. Decadent jazz music became unfashionable with the Chinese Communist revolution, but he managed to continue working at the Russian Club, in Pitt Street Sydney. He brought with him my father Serge, his wife Xenia, his musical scores, and one Trumpet. The Australian government gave them a peppercorn lease on a Deco house on Monterey Street in Sans Souci. My grandmother always told my father a young jazz pianist also……”don’t dream about Melbourne “its such an old fashioned town!”…her sister Galya married a British businessman from the Shanghai Texaco Company and relocated there….Xenia and Sergei made the train trip on the Sydney-Melbourne over night express many times.

About the author/photographer...
Fascinated by military service, from 1910-1914 he was in a company of high school riflemen at the 12th Siberian Rifle Regiment, and served camp training with it. In December 1914, without finishing high school, he volunteered for the army. In 1915 he graduated from the Irkutsk Military School and in the spring of 1916 he was sent to the front, where he remained until September 1917. He commanded the 11th company of the 88th Petrovsky Infantry Regiment, then the assault company of the "Death Battalion".
In December 1917 returned to Vladivostok. In March 1918, when the demobilized Fleet Crew units were leaving the city, V.D. Zhiganov was one of the two officers whose shoulder straps were the last to be removed. Until the day of the first overthrow of the Bolshevik government in Vladivostok, he was a member of the secret anti-Bolshevik organization of Colonel V.A. Volkov and the Union of Frontline Soldiers, with whom he participated in the coup of June 29, 1918.
After the coup, he joined a company of front-line soldiers formed by the Union and later merged with the 1st Siberian Rifle Regiment. Vasily Danilovich commanded this company until he was transferred to the 36th Siberian Rifle Regiment. In May 1919, with a group of one hundred officers (General Volkov's Volunteer Detachment), he left Vladivostok for Omsk, being the standard-bearer of the detachment's banner, presented by the city of Vladivostok.
Zhiganov spent the White campaign in Siberia in the Model Jaeger Division as a junior officer, and then as the head of a machine-gun team.
He arrived in Irkutsk on the day it was captured by the Reds and found himself in their power. On February 16, 1920, risking his life, he escaped from Irkutsk and, having made his way through the front line, arrived at his Jaeger Regiment in Transbaikalia.
It is interesting, but during the 14 months spent on the German front and the entire period of the Civil War, the brave officer was never wounded or shell-shocked, despite the fact that he participated in the most brutal and bloody battles.
Thus, on July 10, 1917 (Kerensky's battles) near Dvinsk, out of twelve officers of the battalion, seven were wounded and three were killed.
In the battles near Barnaul, in the late autumn of 1919, as part of the Model Jaeger Battalion, out of twelve officers of the machine-gun crew, nine were killed and two were wounded. Vasily Danilovich finished his military service with the rank of staff captain. On
May 25, 1922, V.D. Zhiganov left for Kamchatka, for the Dembi fishing grounds. The winter of 1922-1923. was the head of the Nizhne-Kamchatka school, introducing the abolished Law of God, which he himself taught until the end of the school year, despite the arrival of the Bolsheviks there in February. At that time, he was the only teacher of the Law of God in all of Kamchatka, and possibly in the entire Far East.
In 1923, he organized the Union of Fishermen of the Kamchatka River Valley, which united two thousand fishermen of the valley. In the same year, relying on the Union, he organized a strike that lasted 21 days and pursued the goal of fighting the Centrosoyuz. In 1924, he organized a Religious Society, which reopened the Ust-Kamchatka Church, closed in 1918, as a result of which the local department of the State Unitary Enterprise put up strong resistance to the Society, and six months later the church was turned into a Komsomol club.
In the summer of 1925, after the third arrest of V.D. Zhiganov was sent under escort on a schooner to the Provincial Department of the GPU in Petropavlovsk, and from there to Vladivostok. But on the way, during a stop in Japan, he escaped from the ship and remained there until leaving for Shanghai, where he arrived on December 25, 1925.
In Shanghai in 1928, Vasily Danilovich organized the Society of Medical Mutual Aid, which he headed until 1931. At the same time, he was a member of the Council of the Russian National Society. He took an active part in organizing the S.O.R.O.
From 1931 to 1936 he was engaged in publishing activities.

В 1923 г. организовал Союз рыбаков долины реки Камчатка, объединивший две тысячи рыбаков долины. В том же году, опираясь на Союз, организовал забастовку, которая длилась 21 день и преследовала цель борьбы с Центросоюзом. В 1924 году организовал Религиозное общество, которое возобновило работу Усть-Камчатской церкви, закрытой в 1918 году, в результате чего местный отдел ГУП оказал Обществу сильное сопротивление, и через полгода церковь была превращена в комсомольский клуб.
Летом 1925 года после третьего ареста В.Д. Жиганов был отправлен под конвоем на шхуне в Губернский отдел ГПУ в Петропавловске, а оттуда во Владивосток. Но по дороге, во время остановки в Японии, сбежал с корабля и оставался там до отъезда в Шанхай, куда прибыл 25 декабря 1925 года.
В Шанхае в 1928 году Василий Данилович организовал Общество врачебной взаимопомощи, которое возглавлял до 1931 года. Одновременно он был членом Совета Русского национального общества. Принимал активное участие в организации С.О.Р.О.
С 1931 по 1936 год занимался издательской деятельностью.

[Zhiganov V.D.] “Russians in Shanghai” , — Shanghai: Printing house of the publishing house “Slovo”, 1936.
Quite a renown book. There is a very interesting webpage on how so many pages were left out due to the author running out of time.
There should have been 330 pages, with the following pages missing from almost all of them: 23/24, 25/26, 27/28, 29/30, 31/32, 105/106, 107/108, 109/110, 123/124, 125/126, 195/196 , 197/198, 213/214, 215/216, 221/222, 237/238, 281/282, 283/284, 285/286, 287/288, 289/290, 291/292. The copy from the "Russian Shanghainese Collection" contains pp. 195/196 , which are missing from most other known copies of the album.

Recalling the Shanghai troupe, Kozhevnikova wrote "with love, but with sadness, notes that such organizations in the dispersion of the Russian emigration were very, very few." Kozhevnikova wrote with special respect about the role of the remarkable teacher and prima ballerina Englishwoman Audrey King: "Her lessons for all the leading ballerinas of the Russian Ballet, as well as the leading dancers, were the highest pleasure."
Вспоминая шанхайскую труппу, Кожевникова писала «с любовью, но и с грустью, отмечает, что подобных организаций в разбросанной русской эмиграции было очень и очень мало». С особым уважением Кожевникова писала о роли замечательного педагога и прима-балерины англичанки Одри Кинг: «Ее уроки для всех ведущих балерин русского балета, равно как и ведущих танцовщиков, были высочайшим наслаждением».

Does anyone recognise this face? Ths photograph was found in a box that only had renowned Ballerinas, musicians and poets from Harbin.
I am hoping the face might be recognised by some person. On the revere it is written 'Here is Ninka'.
