Curious of your thoughts on this.
>> Reply to message of the user Mivi from December 11, 2023 8:22

Sanchuk (Savchuk) 10.12.2023, 22:05
Hello everyone. I have to use translation as I speak English and am a little unfamiliar with the Ukrainian language and rules of the language as well, so I appreciate the patience and hope for some help learning a little more about the language and also find out for certain my great grandfathers accurate surname spelling and origins of his surname to help me in my research on his family history.
I am looking for some feedback/knowledge of my great grandfather and the most plausible spelling and origin of his first and last name. I was always told he was Ukrainian but I know how complex things were back in these times, he was born in 1888.
His surname in Canada is Sanchuk.
On a Canadian marriage record he is listed as what looks like Kerel which I think maybe Kiril? And his last name looks to be Savchun, which maybe is Savchun? I'm unfamiliar with how it could go from Savchun/Savchuk to Sanchuk in Canada but I hope someone can help me understand this! His father's name on this record is Demetry, seems much is poorly spelt on this record but I am not sure why. Mother's name looks like Feodosia Makaruk? He has a son named Carl born in Canada not sure if that could indicate his name to be Karl? But in Canada his first name is Charles.
Not sure what possibilities there are to confirm the most likely names here but u hope I can kindly get some help and knowledge so I can find out more about his family history! Also another Canadian record says he was born in Cherdia, Podolsk, Russia. Then on another document that is handwritten says Chirdir/Chisdir? Russia, the r in this is not as legible as the rest of the word and his surname on this document is spelt Semchuck.
I've attached supporting documents as well. I know record keeping back this was not the best and is was also quite easy for things to be misspelled and misunderstood.
Hope this helps and hope to get some knowledge of what is likely my great grandfather's accurate name.
