Здравствуйте!
Меняя зовут Орвокки. Я живёт в Финляндии.
At first I have to apologize but I can write Russian only few words, so I have to use English. But You can answer in English or Russian, which one is better for You. I can use google translator to read Russian. Then I have to apologize if this text is in wrong place. I tried to read with google translator but if I have done something wrong, please tell me.
Few years ago my husband’s uncle and aunt asked me to search their grandfather, who went missing the year 1930 and left his two little daughters without dad. Another of the girls is their mother, who was about 2 years in that time. Uncle and aunt are old people now and they would like to know before their dead what happened to their grandfather. And if the grandfather found a new wife, they would like to know if they have cousins or other relatives somewhere…
I have searched and searched; read many books and spent many many evenings in the internet in genealogy sites but I have found very little information about the missing grandfather. I try to write You everything what I have found and I hope this information reaches maybe somebody who knows something or somebody….or anything what can help me to find the grandfather and possible relatives. I write also about other persons because somebody can know someone of them or some places where they lived. So he/she can get a clue about what happened to the grandfather.
His name was Viljami Kumpumäki (nickname Ville) Кумпумяки Вилйами or Кумпумаки Вилями, прозвище Вилле and he had a wife and two girls (2 years and 4 or 5 years) in 1930. The wife is born 1906. So I think Viljami has born between the years of 1895 and 1910. He lived in Rovaniemi, which is a town in northern Finland. He also had some connections in the Soviet Union, maybe even visited there. I have not found any documents about travelling to Soviet Union, but I think he visited there illegally, which was very common in that time in north and east parts of Finland.
The years 1929-30 he had problems in Rovaniemi because of his political opinions and he was suspected of many crimes. For example he was smuggled and distributed political papers, which were communist-positive and he had participated in riots and he had attacked towards police officer. Communism were illegal in Finland that time and you could get accused of treason. There were many battles between right and left wing in that time in Finland. Battles have started after the civil war 1918 when the white and the red had a war and tens of thousands of people died.
So in the year 1930 Kumpumäki had to leave Finland.
There were three men travelling together: Kumpumäki Viljami (Ville), Timonen Akseli and Virtanen Heikki. Кумпумяки Вилйами, Тимонен Аксель, Виртанен Хейкки. They went first to Sweden through Tornio and Haaparanta (Haparanda in Swedish). There they met few friends and they said to them that they are going to Soviet Union. This is the last sure observation of Viljami/Ville Kumpumäki.
I have found some information what happened to those three men. Akseli Timonen was accepted to VKP(b), I think that is Russian communist party. He was in some political or military school in Soviet Union and he was so called red-officer after that. He worked in Petroskoi as a chairman of local radio committee. In the 1935 he was accused of counterrevolution in Soviet Union and arrested. He was sentenced to death in May 1936 in military court of Leningrad. In August 1936 the sentence was changed to 10 years in prison. He was sent to Komi, where he was held in Vorkuta and Inta, until his death 22 th or 23 th May 1944.

Heikki Virtanen was also accepted to VKP(b) and he was in school in Leningrad (Skljansk infantry) and he was red officer too. He was officer in Finnish-speaking Karelian jaeger brigade. After it was ended 1935, he got an order to move Saratov area but already the same year 1935 he was separated from VKP(b) and from army. After that he was working in Petroskoi in Finnish-speaking theatry as a gymnastics supervisor. He was arrested in 19th October 1937 and accused of spying. He was sentenced to death and shot 28th December 1937 in Karhumäki.

But then our missing grandfather Viljami/Ville Kumpumäki, what happened to him…Somebody had seen him in the Soviet Union in 1931 or 1932 and he had told that he was also
accepted in VKP(b). He lived maybe in Petroskoi as the others? There lived also few other Finns, who knew Viljami Kumpumäki, at least Santeri Mankinen, Nanni Mankinen, Stiina Saarela, Kalle Lehto and some old woman who was also Kumpumäki, but I don’t know the first name. Maybe she was Viljamis relative? All these people are dead, so I cannot ask them about Kumpumäki. But I don’t know if they have some relatives still living…
After that there is nothing sure, only rumors and speculations… Somebody said that Kumpumäki was dead soon after he arrived in the Soviet Union - where, when and why?? If he is dead, where is the grave? Somebody said that he was not dead, but he changed his name - which was the name after that?? Somebody said that he was sentenced to prison camp - where and what happened after that?? Somebody said that he moved to America. Somebody said he changed his name and moved back to Finland or Sweden.
I have found in Жертвы политического террора в СССР one person which name is Vilho Kumpumäki who was born 1914, living in Russia and shot 8.10.1938 in Petroskoi but he is not the right person. He is too young. He could not have two daughters in 1930.
I would be very grateful for any information or any help! I have even tried to learn Russian so I could find the grandfather Kumpumäki, but I have noticed that it is too long way… I have learned only alphabet and few words but I cannot read whole internet sites and I cannot search anything in Russian sites and I don’t even know what to seach…
I really really hope that somebody can help me, my husband and his aunt and uncle to find a peace and our possible relatives!
Cпасибо!
