sorry for the vain hope. The guy must be a bad genealogist (me too ), he is not your relative.
I also called the village Starychi where the most Lysens come from. The ladies in the village office were very excited and tried their best, but coul find no relation.

So it remains to wait for the answer from Germany and then to search more precisely.

More than 500 Łysień (ukr. ��) live in Poland mostly in southern part.

I looked up names quoted by Geo Z, called the phone info center in Lviv and the first phone they gave me said - yes, his grandmother was Paraska Lysen from Shklo (poln. Szklo http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szk%C5%82o_%28osiedle%29).

Western Ukraine in interwar was in Poland. Rest of Ukraine was in Soviet Union. In autumn 1939 Western Ukraine was incorporated into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

My wife says he never liked to be called Polish! He was very proud of his Ukranian roots. In England he went to a church bought by the Ukranian community so they could continue to worship in the Ukranian manner.
I have learned from another site that the Germans will have directly changed his name to the Western European spelling to LYSEN. However this may change once I hear from the German Archive service in Bad Arolsen.

Do you have any immigration records when he came to England? The reason why I ask you is because LYSEN might have at least 6 possible russian transcriptions and I want to see what is the original last name with which he came to England. In my experience, for example, Buyanovsky (polish- Bujanowski) was written as Bonianovsky in England. Russian/Ukranian last names are not easily and uniformly converted to English.

This is good. In Russian genealogy the knowledge of place is crucial.

Hi,
Fedir's birthday is 18th may 1921. The location is unknown but somewhere near Lviv. He didnt say much about his time in Ukraine apart from that he grew up at a farm. He was at a library in Lviv when he was rounded up by the Germans and transported to Germany to work as a slave labourer. He did not say much about those years - It must have been a horrible time. he was bought to England to assist with labour shortages after 1947 and the rest of his history is known up to his death in 1990. We are trying to find if any relatives are still alive in Ukraine today. We have applied to a german archive which should give us his hometown and that should make the search more easy. Until that comes we must just ask the kindness of the Ukraine people to see what they can find out. Every scrap of information is very valuable.
