Well, I think, it"s not so easy to do here something, if the name of M. Wahlberg is false. But why then try to erase it? I think, it"s the only trace, so I would try to seek some Wahlbergs in St. Petersburg.
The idea of the finnish name being a translation from the Russian is not bad, but what would be the prototype? Malyshev? Malyshkin? And what to do with them?
I think, the only real possibility is the DNA test results... Some day maybe some close cousin appears...

From digital archives to researching at the archives in Helsinki including hiring Finnish genealogists, but without any success.

[q]
What documents have you seen? Apart from that she exists nowhere else, nothing indicating this Margaretha Wahlberg had ever been born or died.

[q]
"Pienonen" means "small" in Finnish. However a Finnish genealogist we hired suggested "Pienonen" might instead actually be a translation from Russian.

Hello!

No, Wahlberg was supposedly the surname of Aleksander Constantin's mother (though as stated earlier I highly doubt this was her real name as this "Margaretha Wahlberg" exists in no other documents) and thus he was born with the name aswell. It has been suggested that "Pienonen" is a translation from his unknown father's surname, though ofcourse I don't know if there's any truth in it.

Did anyone tell you that "Wahlberg" is a Russian word? It is certainly not Russian, but Germanic.
Thank you kbg_dnepr for trying to help.

I have some more details about my ggg-grandfather. As Aleksander's mother Margaretha presumably left Vyborg or even the land after his birth, he ended up on a orphanage were the manager for unknown reasons changed his surname (Wahlberg) to a Finnish one (Pienonen). It has also been suggested that "Pienonen" might be a translation from Russian to Finnish.
Recently I got another Russian genetic match via 23andMe who also has ancestry from Vyborg.

My family have for over 20 years tried to find out the origins of our direct paternal line, my ggg-grandfather Aleksander Constantin Wahlberg was born 1856 in the town of Vyborg (back then a part of Finland) to an unknown father and a mother named Margaretha Wahlberg (though she appears in no other records than in Aleksander's birth register, which might mean that this was not her real name).
There have been a lot of mysteries surrounding this line, including strange encounters with Soviet authorities and KGB, which leads me to conclusion that the line might have been of Noble Russian ancestry.
I've had a Y-DNA test done, and I belong to the rare haplogroup of N1b which is present in Russia and Finland, my closest genetic match is a Russian person from the Krasnodar region.

We've had Finnish genealogists research this line, but without any success. They suggested us to contact Russian genealogists that have access to Vyborg archives and state archives. Does anyone have any tips on what to do to get in contact with professional Russian genelogists who can do research in this area and access archives?

Thank you.
