Hello everyone,

I’ve started researching my Russian family roots and would be grateful for any help regarding Ushakov Valeriy Nikolaevich.

From what I’ve found so far, he was a career officer. The highest rank I can trace is colonel (1914) — he appears as a godfather at the baptism of his grandson Aleksey Nikolaevich Ushakov in the Siberian Naval Garrison Church in Vladivostok (parish record). In the Penza Governorate memorial books, he is listed as a company commander in the 160th Abkhaz Infantry Regiment (at different times commander of the 2nd and the 11th companies). On ria1914.info he is shown with the 114th Novotorzhsky Infantry Regiment:
Link
to ria1914.info

From officer lists, I extracted the following:

Date of birth: 31 January 1855
Religion: Orthodox
Marital status: Married; 8 children
Education: Gymnasium; Orenburg Infantry Junker School (graduated “successfully”)
Start of service: 30 January 1872

Promotions:

Ensign – 5 Dec 1875

Second Lieutenant – 25 Feb 1876

Lieutenant – 18 Jun 1877

Staff Captain – 15 Mar 1879

Captain – 15 Mar 1889

Campaigns: Russo–Turkish War (1877–1878)

Awards:

Order of St. Anna, 4th class (1878)

Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd class with swords (1879)

Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class with swords (1900)

Order of St. Anna, 2nd class with swords (1905)

Honestly, I have to say that I don’t speak Russian, so some of my translations might be inaccurate, or I might have made mistakes elsewhere. I have managed to gather a lot of information about his military service, but I still don’t know anything certain about his family background or origin.

If anyone has any ideas, information, or has ever come across something related to my case during their own research, I would be deeply grateful for your help.

Thank you very much,
Pavel (CZ)
